Twenty-something Mayla Strong is jolted by change. After being replaced by her boss's niece at work, she takes advantage of her roommate's generosity, incurs the wrath of another friend, and puts her foot in her mouth in front of her crush - her church's pastor, no less! Mayla's attempted remedy, a visit to her estranged grandmother, isn't the panacea she envisioned, as her troubles follow her to Florida. Although Sincerely, Mayla could be classified as Christian Romantic Chick-lit, this isn't a Pollyanna book. While Mayla, with her temper and quadruple-pierced ears, might be considered "rough" by the denizens of the typical Christian novel, the people and situations Mayla encounters and her reactions to them are as craggy and gray as those in the real world. Real, too, is the lesson that new Christian Mayla learns - that the best course of action is to step back and let God handle the situation. Through it all, Mayla prays, not a meek or slick, prefab prayer, but, "Lord, I know the Bible says You'll take care of me. I guess now's Your chance to prove it. And I sure would appreciate it if You don't wait too long, okay?" A must read for all the Maylas and friend of Maylas out there! |
